Supplies
Various fabric rectangles, cut 8"x 10 1/2" (tablecloth shown is 81 rectangles)
Backing fabric
Binding fabric
Sewing Machine
Serger & Serger thread (optional)
Sewing thread

Select fabrics that are all approximately the same weight. If you choose really thick fabrics and some that are very thin, the seams in your tablecloth will not lie flat and thus create hills and valleys. These can be hazardous and create spills.  I chose mostly medium weight home decor fabrics, a few thinner velvet burnouts that I backed with another fabric, some baby corduroy, velveteens, and brocades. The fabric choices I made require that I dry clean this tablecloth.

I suggest you lay out all the pieces on your table or a large open surface such as the floor. This will allow you to see the "finished look" you are creating and adjust the placement of the rectangles.

Sew or serge all the pieces, end to end, into strips, each strip being 9 rectangles long. You should have 9 strips. If the edges of the fabric ravel, you will need to overcast those edges if you use a sewing machine.
Sew the 9 strips together to form the tablecloth.
Back the tablecloth with backing fabric.
Bind the edges with fabric of choice. I would use a thinner fabric for this so that the binding is not too thick.
